The Dread Bog

Deep within the heart of the vast Dread Bog lies a sinister secret, concealed by the thick fog and tangled vegetation. This eerie marshland, shrouded in mystery and dread, is home to a group of cultists known as the Children of Rootwood. For countless generations, they have dwelled in the shadowy recesses of the bog, worshipping a malevolent tree spirit known as Rootwood. The origins of the cult are shrouded in darkness, lost to the annals of time. No records or tales speak of its founding, leaving the true age of the cult a haunting enigma. The cultists have survived and thrived in their secluded sanctuary, veiled by the eerie atmosphere and treacherous terrain of the Dread Bog. For centuries, they remained a minor nuisance, causing occasional trouble for nearby farmers and wayward travelers venturing towards the cities of Arandor, Olverton, Ameresh, or Karagard.

However, the tides shifted when the Shadowclan Orcs ravaged the lands, unleashing chaos and destruction upon Olverton and Tilverton in the year 16668. In the wake of the devastation, survivors sought refuge wherever they could. Some fled to Tilverton, hoping to find solace amidst the ruins, while others chose a different path—a path that led them into the foreboding embrace of the Dread Bog. In the two decades since that fateful siege, a new generation of cultists has risen to power within the ranks of this cult. Their numbers have swelled, bolstered by the addition of those who sought solace amidst the ruins. With each passing year, their influence and malevolent ambitions grow, reaching a point where they catch the attention of the Warden patrols departing from the Elven Capitol of Arandor.

Skirmishes between the cultists and the Elves have become distressingly common, as the Children of Rootwood resist any attempts to invade their sacred domain. The cultists may be a minor faction within the realm, lacking the sheer might and political influence of the major players, but they are not to be underestimated. Rootwood, the very object of their devotion, is a force to be reckoned with—a formidable entity capable of unleashing chaos and destruction upon the unprepared. While the cultists themselves may not possess the means to obtain true power on their own, their rise in prominence has not gone unnoticed by the other factions. Aware of the potential danger posed by this cult, the Elves closely monitor their activities, ensuring that no alliance or support from external forces grants them the opportunity to escalate their influence.

As the cult and its new generation of followers continue to grow in strength and audacity, the residents of the surrounding regions tread with caution. The Dread Bog, once a mere backdrop to their lives, now harbors a malevolence that threatens to spill beyond its borders. The memory of the destruction wrought by the Shadowclan Orcs serves as a constant reminder that even the seemingly insignificant can grow to become a formidable force, capable of wreaking havoc upon the land
