The Mithril Crown

The High King’s heir is elected after a succession event happens, whether that is due to the natural death of the King, an abdication, or death in battle. It is unheard of for the Council to become deadlocked in choosing an heir--it has always been a unanimous decision.

High King: The High King of Dwarves is responsible for the protection and representation of all dwarves. The High King is an absolute monarch who is elected by the council of thanes -- the heir to the throne is voted upon at the time of succession and is chosen not based on heredity but upon merit; who among the Thanes is best fit to lead the Dwarves. The High King and the three thanes all receive one vote. The High King is responsible for enforcing societal norms, acting as the highest judge in the land.

When a Thane becomes High King he loses his title of Thane of his clan, it passing on to whomever is chosen.

Thane: A thane is the leader of his respective clan, sworn to serve the King and his Clan. They chosen within the clan but is generally the eldest or most accomplished member for that clan. Each have a seat on the King’s privy council. The Thanes are generally free to govern their own clansfolk as they see fit and are free to pursue their own domestic goals but they still have an obligation to provide soldiers for the Crown in times of war.

Court Titles

Warden: The warden is an official of the crown whose primary responsibilities are to maintain and train the city guard and ensure the defenses of Karagard are well maintained. The Warden answers only to the High King and is responsible for keeping the High King safe from harm at all times. The warden also dispenses justice, acting as a judge for crimes not deemed fit to be brought before the King or Thanes and in that way is an instrument of the High King’s will. Historically, wardens have usually been commondwarves chosen by the King through personal relationships or through merit.

Royal Historian: The Royal Historian is a title of great prestige in Dwarven society, as dwarves highly value accurate historical documentation. The Royal Historian is responsible for creating all official records and the documentation and preservation of historical works of art or literature. Though the Royal Historian is not a part of the council, he or she is present at all council meetings to keep record. It is also not uncommon for the Thanes and even the High King to seek out the Royal Historian for advice on a wide variety of matters.
