Item Identification

Also referred to as Item ID

Item Identification is a secondary skill used to identify certain objects before they can be used. It is considered a non-core or dump skill, providing no meaningful combat or crafting advantage and serving primarily as a utility.

Overview

  • Available to all classes.
  • Offers no benefit as a mainstay skill for any build.
  • Can be trained slowly over time with persistent use.
  • Items can be identified even with just 1 point in the skill, although the number of attempts required will increase significantly.

Mechanics

  • You can attempt to identify any qualifying item through the context menu or relevant hotkey.
  • Repeated attempts eventually succeed, regardless of current skill level.
  • Item Identification may be temporarily enhanced through specific foods, equipment, or other effects.
  • The Merchant Board allows you to identify one item at a time using a cooldown-based service, bypassing the need to increase the skill manually.

Items that must be Identified

Certain item types must be identified using this skill before they can be used or consumed:

Item Type Identification Required
Alchemical Recipes Yes
Augments Yes
Bard Music Yes
Craft Plans Yes

Training Tips

  • Attempt to identify known items repeatedly, even if you already know the outcome.
  • Use food or gear buffs to speed up progress during focused training.
  • Visit the Merchant Board to identify difficult items if you're not investing skill points in Item ID.

Notes

  • Most players only keep 1–10 skill in Item ID for basic functionality.
  • Not recommended as a primary skill investment unless pursuing a niche or personal challenge.
  • Identification is not required for standard weapons, armor, or most consumables.
