The Iron Legion

Basic Information

Full Name: The Iron Legion of Kelt

Also Referred To As: Legionnaires, Ironborn, Ironblooded

Type of Organization: Mercenary Company, Military

Specialization: Warfare, Strategy, Defense

Values: Brotherhood, Discipline, Honor, Glory, Courage

Background History:

The original Iron Legion fought in the keltish civil war 30 years ago. They were hired by House Cashimyr to battle against the royal army, in retaliation to the high tariffs and cropshares imposed by King Albert Hapsenbran III. In exchange for their service, the legionnaires were promised lands and titles. After capturing an important stronghold in enemy territory, the Legion was abandoned by their patrons, who never fulfilled their part of the contract. Any dream of retirement and owned lands was shattered. Betrayed, they were forced to flee the battlefield, chased by the royal army. Many fell in the pursuit and others deserted the group, resulting in the disbanding of the Legion. Years later, legionary veterans would meet again in the mainland. Reunited by their old bond of brotherhood, they decided to reinstate the Iron Legion, despite their advanced age, in a last pursuit of what they were denied - not for vengeance, but for closure.

Present Time:

The reinstated Iron Legion found employment in Mercadia, where they act as the Kingdom's first line of defense, in exchange for lands to build and plant upon. They were granted a modest stretch of land, where they built a small keep - the guild hall from where they operate: The Bastion, directly west of the main gates.

Coat of Arms: The Iron Gauntlet

Insignia: Ω

The Omega represents the end, the inevitable fate of all legionnaries: death in the battlefield.

Uniforms: While there isn't a uniform per se, we all wear red cloaks as a homage to the days of the original Legion.

To Join: Any class is welcome among our ranks. Below, we offer two suggested origins (but players are free to come up with their own):

Veterans: These are gritty, seasoned legionnaries who were members of the original company 30 years ago. These characters must be at least 50 (human years). Old soldiers past their prime who still have the flame of war burning within. Pick this origin if you'd like your character's story to be intertwined with that of the guild's background.

Rookies: These are new members, who joined the reinstated Legion in Mercadia. They join as recruits and learn the guild's values as they climb the ranks. Pick this origin if you'd like your character's story to progress alongside the new group.

Our guildstone is located just outside of the Bastion. Any interested player can d-click it to apply into the guild. Feel free to shoot me (Drowking) a DM on Discord any time to arrange a meeting and discuss ideas. I'm always open to hearing them.

Hierarchy

We have a minimalistic approach to hierarchy, keeping things simple for the sake of clarity. This doesn't mean we can't expand the ranks as more people join. However, I'm confident in the structure we have now.

Being promoted is an honor for legionnaires. It is a glorious achievement and will always be accompanied by an event in celebration. Each rank has its own pre-requisites, but the main deciding factor is activity and presence in-game.

Also, bear in mind that, while members don't receive a salary per se, they receive other privileges. However, during our hunts, we always split gold evenly, and it is not uncommon for members to forgo their share in favor of newer members.

RP Themes and OOC Info

Inspiration:

Our guild was loosely based on the ancient Roman Legions, from their ranks to their values and customs. To conform with the high fantasy setting, we took some deliberate poetic freedom to give it a more "medieval Europe" feel, although some themes were kept (such as the Latin names).

Language:

While the human world pretty much adopted Common as their main language in the modern day, members are encouraged to learn Keltish. It takes 5 perks to learn (or you can learn over time, simply from hearing us). This is because we sometimes use it to speak among ourselves. It is not mandatory to learn, but it does add a nice flavor. Keltish is considered an old and dead language, which we're roleplaying as Latin. Many of our sayings and motifs use Latin for that reason, but in-game it's ancient Keltish.

Faith:

Legionnaires are free to adhere to any religion that fits their character. However, in the Legion itself, there is a shared belief that their fallen comrades look after them from beyond the veil. It is customary for legionnaires to always leave a lit lantern outside their houses, their lights serving to guide their dead brethren in arms back to their side. In doing that, the fallen are given another chance at the victory and glory which will grant them eternal peace in the afterlife. Legionnaires often pray to their dead guild mates, asking for strength, courage and wisdom before a great battle or hunt.

Death:

As soldiers, they know their inevitable end will be in the battlefield. Legionnaires accept this as the ultimate truth. Because of that, they don't fear death. They fear dying in disgrace: betrayed, disabled or of natural causes. To die fighting, with a weapon in hand and the blood of your enemies splattered on your face, is a glorious death. That is why, before their every battle, legionnaires call out to Death in their warcry - both in reverence and in defiance.

Common Sayings (in Acient Keltish):

MORS! = DEATH! (Legion Warcry)

Ferrum est indestructibile = Iron is indestructible

In sanguine et morte fabricatum = Forged in blood and death

Fraternitas aeterna est = Brotherhood is eternal

Per honorem meum = By my honor

Mors gloriosa = A glorious death

OOC Information:

As a guild, we are heavily focused on group play. Legionnaires are all about being loyal to one another. They share a strong bond, an eternal brotherhood. This is true for veterans and will be developed in-game for new recruits. We engage with a lot of the content available in the shard, including hunts, timed dungeons and bosses. But we're also roleplay enthusiasts, so we can often be found in Edana, patrolling, at the Bastion or in the tavern (legionnaires love their drinks, lol). The guild functions around group effort, with each member contributing what they can (resources, ideas, stories, events etc). While we're based in Mercadia and loyal to the Kingdom, we want to have a strong presence in the world, partaking in GM-run quests and what not. We welcome all styles of play, the only requirement is the basic: be respectful of your fellow guildmates and the Regisfall community at large.
