Military and Tactics

Elves make up for their lack of numbers by creating complementary groups consisting of two to ten members. That is not to say they will never travel, or fight, alone but their low birth rates and longevity has instilled a culture that lends itself well to the idea of working in familiar groups so that they are both cohesive and devastatingly effective.

Pairs, Lances, Squads, and Companies

Number of Elves Designation Leader
2 Pair No
3 Lance Yes
4 - 7 Squad Yes
8 - 10 Company Yes

Pair

Elven pairs are typically extremely compatible fighters who have trained together for extensive periods of time and do not require much in the way of verbal communication, often acting entirely off of their familiarity with the other's strengths while covering for any gaps in their technique. Pairs do not usually include Elves who are learning their way in the world, though it is not entirely impossible to encounter a new pair somewhere in the world it is rare they would be found beyond the borders of Elven lands.

Lance

Elven Lances are the smallest group that will include a designated leader, but their command structure is not strict. Quite often a lance is lead by a more experienced Elf who will be responsible for mentoring a pair. That said, a lance can also be comprised entirely of a more experienced group of Elves sent out to accomplish a particular task on behalf of Arandor.

Squad

Elven Squads have a strict command structure and are the smallest group with a designated leader. They are often dispatched to respond to direct threats to Arandor, assault enemy positions, or carry out specific tasks. Squads are, quite often, the largest contingent of Elves that will be seen outside of Elven Lands. They can be comprised of as little as four Elves. It is not uncommon for a squad to include one or more pairs, though it is not a strict requirement. If their King or Queen should leave Elven lands, it is not uncommon that he or she is accompanied by a group at least this size.

Company

Elven Companies are usually only assembled to respond to an immediate threat to Arnador or to travel to some of the most hostile territories. Elven companies, though rare, are a sight to behold as they are quite often comprised of highly trained and well equipped Elves. As with a squad, their members can include several pairs, and they defer to a leader to make their decisions. Elven companies do not often travel into the other realms without permission, except in passing, so as to avoid any misunderstandings unless there is simply no way to avoid such an action.
