Just as in real life your character will become hungry over time. Some foods satisfy this hunger more than others.

Thirst is not a requirement.

This command shows a players current level of hunger.

Pets

Tamed Pets have their own separate system for Happiness. Feeding your pet their preferred food increases their happiness. If your pet becomes too unhappy from not being fed it will go wild.
