== Age of Discovery ==

Elves are said to be the first born children of the world, beautiful and timeless.
When the first Elves came to be the world was new, there were no cities only the wild of the land and its animal inhabitants.
Many of the first Elves came together and formed a small community it was there they practiced magic, their crafts and made poetry, those that did not join the community went outward exploring the lands and learned more ways to survive and thrive.

== Age of Sundering ==

For thousands of years these Elves grew and learned much until the Sundering.
A spider demon named Lloth took interest in these beings they called Elves, jealous of the Valar for having created such a beautiful race she manipulated a rather large population of Elves to break from the Valar.These Elves that had broken away from the Valar’s light to serve Lloth were deemed Drow, they became cruel and unrelenting in their service to the spider demon and in time a civil war erupted between the two factions. Eventually after a long and brutal war the Elves were able to beat the Drow back into the depth of the world and seal them there, and that is where they stay to this day.

After the Sundering the Elves realized that there was a darkness in this world that lingered and took aim at the weak. They took up arms against this darkness knowing they were the only ones capable of defending the beauty and life of the world from such evil.

== Age of Peace ==

After the Sundering the Elves entered into an Age of Peace and met some of the first Dwarves, the two races were standoffish at first but in roughly two thousand years a great relationship formed, many Elves marveled at how the Dwarves would turn simple rock to such wondrous things. Trade and merriment was shared with these new allies.

Many more years passed and eventually the Elves constructed their first city taking some notes on how the Dwarves worked their stone. Arandor was born a great city for the Elven people to take refuge in. It was also during this time they came to an understanding that a system of leadership needed to be established thus the Elder King was created.
A democratic voting system was put into place and each Elf would vote for who they thought would best lead their people and Arandor. This tradition of leadership continues to this day.
During this Age of Peace many Elves honed and perfected their professions in preparation for one day the darkness of the world may spill outward once more.

== Age of Chaos ==

The dawn of this Age came when the first settlements of men were discovered by the Elves, at first the Elves welcomed this new race to the world with open arms, they thought the humans strange and almost took pity on them for having such short life spans, the Elves offered guidance and wisdom to the humans.
But to late did the Elves realize that there was a greed in the heart of men and because of such greed Arandor fell to a state of almost ruin, humans who had viewed the Elves only for their kindness tried to take the great city, not comprehending many Elves who had taught them the skills they now used against the city were masters of their art.

A war waged against these greed torn humans, in the end the Elves were forced to completely wipe out the settlement of humans with advanced Elven magic which had been practiced for thousands of years, it was an easy task and not one Elf took grimace upon it, for they knew that darkness could not sprout in these volatile creatures.

After the genocide of the settlement, Elves retracted from interactions with all other humans of the world, worrying that their greed or jealousy may heighten at the sight of Elven grace and poise.
It was also during this Age the Elves discovered a tribe of wild Orc, as the Elves observed these wild beasts they came to understand the Orc could have a system of honor and maybe even be something of worth but their blood lust and blind zealotry for their dark war god Gruumsh was too much, many an Elf had perished from trying to learn more of these beasts and it came to be known that the Orc was nothing more than a chained animal and should be put out of its misery.

Marking the end of this Age of Chaos the Elves again pulled into their own lands to better fortify against the darkness that inhabited the world.

== Current Time: Age Unknown ==

The Elves have just again began to emerge from their lands, sensing an impending darkness ready to consume the world and they being the only form of life in their own mind that can stop such evil ready themselves to face it on all sides.

The personality of Elves varies from Elf to Elf, younger Elves are more inquisitive and naive while those who have seen the darkness of the world tend to be more harsh and serious in matters. Because Elves live forever their sense of time is much longer than most races and their scope of life and death towards other races is that of disinterest.
== Physical Appearance ==

Forest Elves usually have more tanned skin tones with darker hair colors browns, blacks and deep reds.
High Elves are more fair skinned with golden to silver hair colors.
However both traits can be found on any Elf due to mixing of bloodlines over the course of thousands of years, most Elves stand tall upwards of 6’0 ft and are known for their beauty and grace. Because of their beauty and grace most Elves consider those with the longest best cared for hair to be the most beautiful or handsome.

== Age of Sundering ==

== Age of Peace ==

== Age of Chaos ==

The personality of Elves varies from Elf to Elf, younger Elves are more inquisitive and naive while those who have seen the darkness of the world tend to be more harsh and serious in matters.
== Society ==

There are two types of Elves the Forest Elves and the High Elves.
Forest Elves were the ones to explore the lands when they first came to be, attuning themselves to nature.
The High Elves explored more arcane pursuits tethering their lifeforce to much of the arcane arts. Both of these Elves however work in a harmonious way, and call one another kin.
All Elves consider themselves equal with equal rights and opinions the exceptions to this are those that hold position in the leadership of Arandor and the Elven race as a whole.

== Law ==

There are few laws of the Elves but those laws that are in place if broken go against the Valar and can cause those who break them to lose their Elven Grace cursing them for the rest of their days.

Never take the life of your kin.

Only the Elder King can decide who is bestowed Elven crafts outside of Elves.

If needed to defend the land any sort of measure should be taken.

Only those trusted by the Elven people and permitted by the Elder King should be granted entry into Elven lands.

== Physical Appearance ==

Elves take up adventuring out of wanderlust. Since they are so long-lived, they can enjoy centuries of exploration and discovery.

'''Saerin, the Creator'''

== Creation ==

Saerin is said to be master of the Soul Forge and an unparalleled craftsman. In times long forgotten he smithed many worlds. It is believed that each star in the sky is another world crafted by Saerin. Though these worlds are without life or meaning, empty and desolate.

Saerin, desiring ones to pass on his craft, sought out a towering, scaly boar within his realm and battled it. The swine, known as Avi, is often illustrated as having a long curving horn and brass scales. In depictions of this great cosmic battle, Avi is often shown as attacking Saerin with her fiery breath. After it was slain Saerin pulled from the swine’s mouth it’s three fangs and with them smithed his children, the first dwarves.

Within his realm he tried to teach them all he knew but they wandered confused and lost, as it was not truly their home. Knowing this Saerin returned to the boar’s hulking corpse and from it’s heart he crafted them a world of their own full of life and riches. A world for them to call home and practice their crafts until they were ready to return and aide him in the Soul Forge. He placed his children upon this world.

But on this world they suffered, cold and blind through the darkness. Saerin saw this and once again returned to the boar, removing it’s eyes and crafting from them the Sun and Moon, to warm and guide his children. Even still in the light they were still lost, wandering aimless, exposed to the elements. So Saerin, in his undying love for his creations, returned to the boar one last time and took from it it’s scales and with them crafted the mighty mountains of the world to house his children.

Within them his children found shelter and took root, thriving and prospering from the riches he had provided them.

== Afterlife ==

Dwarves believe when you die, if you were not dishonored in life, you return to Soul Forge where you are able to ply your trade. Here, with all your dwarven brethren and sisters, you are able to aide Saerin in the creation of worlds by day and feast by night until the end of time itself.

Those who were dishonored in life are said to be unable to enter the Soul Forge until their honor is restored. One of the reasons dwarves are such meticulous record keeper is because if you are dishonored or wronged in life and die without resolution you are doomed to wander the earth as spirits until time’s end. Even after a dwarf’s death his honor can be restored, clans and family often going to great lengths to do so. This is mainly done through the resolution of a grudge.

If the dishonor was brought on by their own actions, it is common for their clan or family to seek out priests of Saerin in hopes that Saerin might restore their honor and allow them passage into the Soul Forge.

== Appearance ==

Throughout the ages the depiction of Saerin is unchanging. Saerin is depicted as a humanoid being of great age, with a thick flowing snow white beard in varying length, though always long. There are countless carving and engraving of him on anything from small vases to the walls of Karagard.

It is believed that dwarves were created in the image of Saerin, thus beards are a holy symbol. Because of this dwarves take great pride in their beards, maintaining it with zealous. As a dwarf ages their hair and beard tend to turn completely white, rather than grey, which furthers the resemblance to Saerin. It is believed that it is not until you hair is white that you are ready to enter the Soul Forge.

Because of this holy meaning placed on their facial hair, even a small trimming of your beard is looked at with disdain. To shave one’s beard is considered heresy, and symbolizes and renouncement of Saerin and all dwarven beliefs.

== Omens and Spirits ==

Dwarves are a naturally superstitious race. Taking both good and ill omens very seriously. Dwarven priests often read and interpret omens and determine whether they good or bad. Different clans may hold unique omens and superstitions of their own. Likewise, one clan might consider an omen ill while another may consider it a sign of luck.

'''Common Dwarven Omens and Superstitions'''

-Opening a new mining cavern and encountering Bloodrock as the first ore is often a seen as an ill sign. When this happen mines are typically closed off though not always.

-Comets, though seldom are recorded in history, are generally regarded as good omens. Foretelling wealth and an age of prosperity.

-Mistakenly dropping a coin and it landing face up is a very common sign of good luck to come.

-Stepping on a mushroom while mining is said to bring a decade of bad luck on you and your clan.

-Rats nesting within a forge can be considered both an ill and good omens.

Countless more.

'''Spirits'''

Many dwarves believe those among them who were disloyal or were dishonored in their life are doomed to wander the earth as spirits. These spirits can bare both good and ill will, can seek redemption or vengeance, though most are believed to hold ill intents. Many dwarves, especially the more aged dwarves, hold a great fear of spirits.

== Physical Appearance ==

Dwarves are a short race, as the name implies, standing from 4'3" – 4'9" (1.3 – 1.45 meters) on average,.What Dwarves lack in height they make up for in bulk; they are, on average, about as heavy as humans. A dwarf can weigh anywhere from about 160 – 220 lbs (73 – 100 kg). Dwarven males are a bit taller and heavier than their female counterparts. Like humans, dwarves have a wide variety of skin, eye, and hair colors. Those born within the same clan tend to share similar physical traits.

Male dwarves have a variety of different hairstyles and naturally grow thick facial hair. As boasting is typically frowned upon in dwarven society it is a common for well off dwarves to elaborately style their beards and ornament them with gold and jewels to display their wealth.

Women are short and stocky. Wearing their hair in elaborate braids, adorned similarly to a male dwarf’s beard. ‘Roundness’ and ‘plumpness’ are considered beautiful qualities for a female dwarf to have.

Runic tattoos are very common amongst both male and female dwarves. It is a common belief that these runes can ward off ill spirits as well as bring luck.

Dwarves are a long-lived race, though not so much as the Elves, and reach physical maturity somewhat later than humans. A dwarf is considered an adult once he or she reached age fifty. Dwarves age much like humans but over a longer period of time, remaining vigorous well past 300 years. Most dwarves live for five or six centuries, some even beyond that.

==Personality==

Dwarves are generally regarded as being very cynical, slow to trust and highly secretive in their nature. They hold an immense sense of pride but are never seen to boast. Believing that showing one’s worth and think little of those who speak of their own.

This pride extends to many aspects of their life, taking great pride in their loyalty and straightforward dealings. Dwarves think little of those who are dishonest or disloyal.

Dwarves tend to choose their words very carefully and do not often speak without meaning. They put great weight behind not only their own words but words spoken to them. Because of this insults are taken with the utmost gravity and are rarely spoken by dwarves.

They are cautious in all things and often times stubborn because of this they are often slow to act, sometimes to a fault.

Dwarves, too, are known for personally holding grudges for centuries and the race as a whole is known to hold certain wrong-doings deep in their hearts for millenia at a time. The High Kings are rumored to have a massive tome of grudges but it has never been seen by an outsider.

They likewise hold oaths to high esteem, believing it being not only a bond to whom it’s given but a bond to Saerin himself. Because of this oaths do not end with the passing of the oath giver but last generation after generation. Because of the weight oaths carry amongst dwarves very few have ever been given throughout their history.

Though much of the tales of Dwarven greed are exaggeration, they do tend to have a heavier sense of greed and ambition than the other races. A dwarf may never feel happy with their holdings in life, ever pursuing greater wealth and standing. Though the severity varies greatly from one dwarf to another.

To an outsider Dwarves may seem solemn and serious, within their homeland of Karagard there can be found merriment abound. Great feasts and heavy drinking being a long standing tradition for celebrations and holidays. Due to their distrustful nature they rarely permit themselves to cut loose outside of the safety of their homeland.

== The Mithril Crown ==

The High King’s heir is elected after a succession event happens, whether that is due to the natural death of the King, an abdication, or death in battle. It is unheard of for the Council to become deadlocked in choosing an heir--it has always been a unanimous decision.

'''High King:''' The High King of Dwarves is responsible for the protection and representation of all dwarves. The High King is an absolute monarch who is elected by the council of thanes -- the heir to the throne is voted upon at the time of succession and is chosen not based on heredity but upon merit; who among the Thanes is best fit to lead the Dwarves. The High King and the three thanes all receive one vote. The High King is responsible for enforcing societal norms, acting as the highest judge in the land.

When a Thane becomes High King he loses his title of Thane of his clan, it passing on to whomever is chosen.

'''Thane:''' A thane is the leader of his respective clan, sworn to serve the King and his Clan. They chosen within the clan but is generally the eldest or most accomplished member for that clan. Each have a seat on the King’s privy council. The Thanes are generally free to govern their own clansfolk as they see fit and are free to pursue their own domestic goals but they still have an obligation to provide soldiers for the Crown in times of war.

'''Gnomish Elder:''' This gnome is the chosen leader of the gnomish race and is considered “Thane” of all Gnomes. They has the authority of a Thane, having a seat on the council and weighing in on important decision. He or she has all the responsibilities and power of a Thane, except electing heirs, though they can influence the election as they are present during them and can voice the thoughts of their people.

'''Alekeeper:''' The Current Thane of clan Alekeeper is Garrin Alekeeper.

'''Cinderbrew:''' All remnants and power of clan Cinderbrew has died off. Will be replaced within the council.

== Court Titles ==

'''Warden:''' The warden is an official of the crown whose primary responsibilities are to maintain and train the city guard and ensure the defenses of Karagard are well maintained. The Warden answers only to the High King and is responsible for keeping the High King safe from harm at all times. The warden also dispenses justice, acting as a judge for crimes not deemed fit to be brought before the King or Thanes and in that way is an instrument of the High King’s will. Historically, wardens have usually been commondwarves chosen by the King through personal relationships or through merit.

'''Royal Historian:''' The Royal Historian is a title of great prestige in Dwarven society, as dwarves highly value accurate historical documentation. The Royal Historian is responsible for creating all official records and the documentation and preservation of historical works of art or literature. Though the Royal Historian is not a part of the council, he or she is present at all council meetings to keep record. It is also not uncommon for the Thanes and even the High King to seek out the Royal Historian for advice on a wide variety of matters.

== Law & Structure ==

The dwarven people are one of the more relatively free folk in the world. Dwarven society is not strictly regimented through books of law, rather, the norms and expectations of dwarven culture keep order and righteousness among the commondwarves and clansfolk alike. When ‘crimes’ are committed, albeit rare they are, punishment and restitution are decided by the Thanes of their own clan or by the High King and his warden if a conflict of interest is present or if the offenders are commondwarves .

When a ‘tort’ (crime) is believed to have occurred by a dwarf, the dwarf comes to his Thane or the Warden and presents his case. The judge will then decide whether or not the tort is a legitimate complaint. If it is a legitimate issue, the tortfeasor (accused) will be brought before the judge along with the accuser and/or representatives of their choice.

The judge will then hear both dwarves statements about the events or trespasses in question and decide punishment. Those who bring false torts to bear may be in turn punished themselves, and both the accuser and accused may state which punishment they would like doled out for the judge's consideration, though the final ruling is always up to the judge

Many would consider the dwarves to be a very wealthy race as a whole. Even the poorest commondwarf will have many trinkets and items made of gold and silver in their domicile. They are known as shrewd traders and negotiators when they deal with the other races. Dwarves, however, are fiercely protective of their trade secrets and craftsmanship and it is very rare that a dwarven weapon will leave dwarven hands freely.

Dwarven contract writing is renowned throughout the world for its complexity and contracts are viewed as minor oaths to dwarves. Thus, they spend much time forging a document that is ironclad in their favor. Between dwarves, this has been known to create years worth of back and forth offer and counter-offers before a solution is finally settled on major matters.

== Social Norms ==

Dwarven society is principally governed by its social norms and the expectations they imprint upon the dwarves, commoners and clansfolk alike. Beards, for example, are very important in dwarven male culture. A dwarf shaving himself clean, for instance, has almost always been viewed as heresy and might be punished by exile or even execution.

The very rare banishing of a dwarf from Karagard historically has only been in cases of great heresy or offense to the dwarven way of life (and therefore Saerin’s image) always included the shaving of the dwarf’s beard and submerging him in a concoction that irrevocably makes them incapable of growing hair. These dwarves, easily identifiable from a distance, are viewed as being cast out of Saerin’s blessing and protection in this world and can never vindicate themselves to the mortal dwarves. Their only hope is to live out their days in humble dwellings and pray for forgiveness in death, how many ever centuries that may be away. Dwarven suicide is nearly unheard of.

As a whole, dwarves frown greatly upon trickery and underhanded actions, such as lying or plotting assassination. Furthermore, Necromancy is considered one of if not the greatest offense, as only Saerin has the right to create and wield the power of life.

== Clans ==

The clans were originally created by the first three dwarves, each of them going forth and founding a great Dwarven Hold. Of the original three clans only two remain, and of the great holds of old only Karagard remains under dwarven control.

The clans are fiercely protective of their trade secrets and of their genetic stock, typically only breeding within their own clan. When a dwarf of one of the great clans produces a child with a commondwarf, that child is viewed as a bastard and is either recognized as legitimate by the Thane of that clan or disowned and left as an orphan especially in cases of adultery. The parents have no say in the fate of their child.

Today, the clans compete fiercely to pick up talented commondwarves skilled in battle or craftsmanship. It is considered a great honor amongst the commondwarves to be adopted into a Clan and it stands as an aspiration for many dwarves, driving them forward to perfect their trades or to prove their capacity as negotiators and traders. As clans also hold most of the real political power in Karagard adoption is one of the only avenues available for ambitious commondwarves to raise in status especially as officers in the fighting ranks of that Clan.

When a commondwarf is offered to be brought into the family by that clan’s Thane, he or she abandons their surname and takes that of the Clan. They may never be referred to as their former name from that day forward as to do such is to slight the Clan that has welcomed them in as family.

== Commondwarves ==

Most dwarves are born without a clan, whether they are simply the descendants of other commondwarves or bastards of one of the great Clans. Prominent commondwarf families are not uncommon and some even own large businesses in Karagard and elsewhere. Commondwarf families often adopt the bastard orphans abandoned by the clansfolk either out of kindness or to replace a void left by their own inability to produce viable children. Birth rate amongst dwarves is very low. Many trying to centuries without results.

The commondwarves of modern Karagard often find themselves as laborers in the mighty foundries of the city, as employees of the great Dwarven trading companies or, in many cases, they apprentice themselves to a master craftsman hoping to learn the trade themselves and gain notoriety through the greatness of their works. For most commondwarves there is no work they view as being below them.

It is rare, however, for commondwarves to leave Karagard when not in the employ of a trading enterprise: there are even fewer opportunities for groups of commondwarves outside of Karagard without the infrastructural backing of a Clan or large business.

== Naming Conventions ==

All Dwarves who are born or adopted into a clan take that clan’s name. If a dwarf chooses to leave or is expelled from their clan they lose their Clan name. Commondwarves take their names after feats or such that they are known for before they come of age, though some families of prominent commondwarves have been known to pass on their name to their children, simulating the practice of the Clans, though to profess your name as that of a Clan’s without adoption or birthright is a great offense to that clan’s Thane.

== Grudges ==

Dwarves believe very vehemently that wrongdoings that cause one great dishonor must be avenged by any means necessary or they will otherwise be doomed to wander the realm as spirits until their grudges are resolved.

'''Grudgekeepers'''

When a dwarf cannot resolve his grudges in his own life, it is often left up to his sons or daughters to resolve them so that their parent may know peace and eternal happiness at the Soulforge. Sometimes these inspired individuals dedicate themselves to a most holy life of avenging the unavenged, vindicating the spirits of dwarves who have perished with trespasses still standing, those who died childless or whose family or friends have no means of making things right. These dwarves are known as the Grudgekeepers

== The Beginning ==

The exact origins of the dwarves has been long lost in myth and legend. It is believed, however, when the first Dwarves awoke they spread out across the lands, each creating a Great Clan and Great Hold within the mountains forged for them by Saerin. The clans created were known as Slateforge, Leadmantle, and Alekeeper. Their respective holds named Beldordauk, Thor Gomath and, grandest of them all, Karagard.

Each clan ruled independently of one another, forming their own culture and customs. They traded heavily with the other Clans initially but quickly began to expand their trade to the other races. The bounty provided to them by Saerin and their mountain homes helped each clan grow exponentially in wealth and power, each using that wealth to ever expand their lands and holdings.

For many centuries the clans prospered greatly through trade and commerce but that swiftly changed after the First Great War.

== The War of Iron - First Great War ==

“They marched as one, their armor bright in the summer sun and I saw, to my own despair, terror in my Thane’s eyes.” - Kargral Slateforge on the Siege of Beldordauk

Thun II of Clan Slateforge was the first Clan to encounter the young human race, whose kingdom was still new to the lands. Though little was known of the Humans, Thun II saw great potential for trade between the two races and trade routes were quickly established. When Thun II met the human King he noted that he wore no crown or jewels and ordered his greatest smiths & gemcutters to forge a great crown to help seal the new friendship between the two. He gifted the crown to the human king and together they prospered for many decades.

Over the years the humans expanded quickly and changed just as quickly, not only their kings but their customs and demands. This confused the dwarves, having dealt mostly with the Elves in the past who remained unchangingly consistent throughout the ages. They began to feel slighted when humans wished to change or renegotiate long standing arrangements and when met with refusal, threatened to seek trade with a different clan for the prized minerals. But was not until one of their shipments of iron was stolen and the dwarves guarding it slain, that hostilities broke out.

Thun II heard of the theft and, having no real concept of banditry as Dwarves have none of their own, believed the humans sought to deceive him. He met with the human king and demanded payment for the shipment and compensation for the dwarven lives lost. The King’s explanations fell deft upon him and in his anger, he demanded the crown gifted to the humans returned. When the King refused the dwarves attacked and slew him then fled back into their dwarven realm.

The war that followed was quick and bloody, lasting only a few decades. The Dwarves, having never met any organized enemies were unprepared for the trained armies of the humans who were veterans from the wars they had waged against their own kind. There was not a single battle that decided the war but a series of losses. This slow loss of ground and the dwindling of the Dwarven army inevitably forced Thun II to call his clan back into the mountain hold of Beldordauk.

The humans sieged the hold, barring the trade of fresh food that dwarves had grown to depend on from entering. The dwarves fell into starvation and in one last desperate attempt Thun II lead the remainder of his clan’s warriors in a furious sally from the Hold in an attempt to break the siege. They were met with resounding defeat and with the last of the military gone the humans breached the gates. Within they found little resistance and slaughtered all they could find. The few survivors fled to the hold of Karagard where they once again found a home.

Thus ended the first great war.

== Kurand’s Folly - The Second Great War ==

“Like shadow they came, the Thane shouted but the words hung in his throat. As I fled I heard no shouts, no screams. Only silence.” -Brorud Leadmantle on the Death of Thane Kurand II

Kurand I of Clan Leadmantle founded his hold of Thor Gomath deep within the caverns of the Underdark. He prided himself in having the deepest hold of any Clan. Each generation dove deeper and deeper into the mountain, the hold and their domain expanding as they did so. Their large mines brought them great wealth and they quickly became the wealthiest of all the Dwarven Clans.

When Kurand II became Thane he doubled the expansion, delving deeper than they ever had before. As they dug they found many riches but among the riches they found, as well, doom. It was centuries after the War of Iron that the Leadmantle clan first encountered the drow. The initial encounter was a small skirmish, deep within the mines of Thor Gomath. This was quickly followed by a series of skirmishes throughout their tunnels. No dwarves surviving to speak on what happened and the drow remained mostly a mystery. It was not until Kurand II led a small platoon of dwarven elite warriors into the tunnels to discover the source of the disappearances that they became truly aware of the Drow threat.

Little is known about the death of Thane Kurand II or his platoon, but one dwarf warrior escaped and managed to make report of the new enemy that lurked in the depth of the Underdark. Under the leadership of Thane Emdahr I, the dwarves rallied their forces and marched into the Underdark to purge them from their sacred & beloved home. The battles that followed are recorded as the bloodiest in dwarven history, both sides taking heavy losses.

The drow wielded great magics and attacked with tactics the dwarves had never encountered. Slowly over many decades the dwarves were pushed further and further back until the held only Thor Gomath. Within the hold they found safety and were able to recover, they sealed off the tunnels and vowed to never unseal them.

Six decades later the Drow assaulted the Hold of Thor Gomath. It is believed they managed to enter another of the many mining tunnels that lead to the Hold. They came without warning and in numbers the dwarves had dared not even imagine. A paltry defense met them that was swiftly overrun. They washed over Thor Gomath in a wave, slaying all they could. Thane Emdahr I lead what remnants he could to the surface. They wandered for a time until they finally ventured to the Hold of Karagard. The survivors were welcomed and took root within.

Thus ended the second great war.

== The Age of Respite ==

“He spoke with not the voice of a dwarf, or even of a Thane but with the voice of Saerin himself.” -Druddin Alekeeper, First Royal Historian, on High King Dolrem of Clan Alekeep.

An astute and learned dwarf, Thane Dolrem of Clan Alekeeper, taking note of the weakness disunity had made for the Dwarven people, consolidated the power of the remaining clans and was pronounced the first High King of the Dwarves. The Founding Oath was taken and the dwarven council formed. Those there swore to remain loyal to the Mithril Crown for all time. Within the walls of of Karagard and under his leadership the remaining dwarves lived together and prospered for several centuries. Each clan reestablishing trade routes of old, the unified dwarven Kingdom grew greatly in strength.

== Dolrem’s War -The Third Great War ==

“Clad in gold and red they marched into the depths. Their battle hymns echoing through the caverns like thunder.” -Druddin Alekeeper, First Royal Historian on the Dark March

The dwarves had learned from the follies of their past. The Thanes and the High King had maintained well trained and well equipped military forces throughout the centuries. This military proved instrumental when, after an age of peace, they met once again their now ancient enemy, the Drow, within the caverns. After a few relatively small skirmishes the High King called for the dwarves to mobilize. Under him the Thanes united their armies and marched into the Underdark.

At the start of the war the drow took much of the dwarven holdings that lay deep within the mountains. They attacked mining tunnels and small outposts, pushing back much of what little resistance there was as the dwarven army marched to bolster their outlying defenses. When the army finally met their enemy they fared vastly better than before, knowing more of the magics and tactics that the Drow employed. Nevertheless the battles were difficult and costly, many dwarven lives were snuffed out within the depth of the Underdark in those days.

In one of the few defeats, and by far the most devastating of the war, Thane Dratton, of clan Slateforge, lead his clan into a drow ambush in which none survived. The clan, still wounded from their ancient defeat, never recovered and were left to the fond remembrance of history. After a painful century of war the dwarves managed to reclaim all of their lost land and seal off most of the tunnels that lead to the domain of the drow. Weary of war, High King Dolrem declared the war’s end.

Thus ended the third great war.

== The Gilded Age ==

“As they came, carrying in their arms what little belongings they could, I saw not strangers but kinsmen, long lost.” -Durin Alekeeper, Royal Historian on the Gnomish Exodus.

Following Dolrem’s War, peace reigned over the dwarves once more. Thedru Cinderbrew, a reknown dwarven warrior from a wealthy family who aided the High King and lead his family into battle against the drow, was granted Clanhood and took Clan Slateforge’s place within the Council. With the council whole once more the Kingdom and clans began to rebuild and grow. It was a slow growth, however, with their birth rates being at an all time low and their wealth nearly diminished the Clans and Kingdom were a shadow of what they once were.

Centuries after Dolrem’s War began the Gnomish Exodus. The Gnomes, having lost their own city after a war with an Orcish and Goblin horde, came to Karagard seeking shelter. The High King, sympathetic to their plight, welcomed the Gnomes as kin. Their remnants came in a tide. The King and Thanes did all they could to ease the transition but, even still, the two cultures clashed endlessly. The Gnomes, unaware of the deep traditions and pride the Dwarves held, caused great conflict within the city. The Dwarves, unsure what to think of the Gnome’s strange and carefree nature, viewed them with great distrust. It would be centuries before the two races would learn to live in unison.

Thus begins the present era.

'''Saerin, the Creator'''

== Creation ==

== Afterlife ==

== Appearance ==

== Omens and Spirits ==

== The Beginning ==

== Kurand’s Folly - The Second Great War ==

== The Beginning ==

== Kurand’s Folly - The Second Great War ==
