'''The Age of Ash: The Ancient Uruk Kingdom'''
----

The Age of Ash is generally marked by the lazgul as the first encounter with the Humans of the world. The Uruk were chased back into their swamps and mountains by the humans, and the subsequently hunted down. After several generations of great fear of the humans, The First Warchief, remembered now as Gi'jak, rose up and gathered the scattered clans of orcs and unified them into the Great tribe, known to and maintained to this day as Burz'kal Hont-Ob. Using a fallen human citadel built on their sacred mountain, The orcs took what they had learned about Humans over the years and applied it to their own ends. This was the age of the Maker, when Bloodrock was found deep in the mines and fire was created in the darkened forges. Seeking revenge for the generational slaughter of his people, Gi'jak rallied the other "savages" to his cause. Ettins, Trolls, ratmen and the lizardmen massed into rank behind Gi'jak and Burz'kal Hont-Ob. The Great Horde laid waste to the southern kingdoms of men and drove them north beyond Burz'kal. A great Tribute had been paid by the humans and Gruumsh was satisfied...for a time

'''The Age of Fire: The Fall of the Orcs'''
----

The Orcs learned many ways of the humans in their conquest over the men of the south, some of them harmful. Basking in the seemingly unending riches they had taken, the Orcs of Burz'kal Hont-Ob grew lazy. Over the years, the humans did not dare venture south, The other races of the world rarely left their own lands and as such, contact between the Orcs and others was very sparse, save the occasional Ride that was called by whichever Warchief. Though the frequency of these became less and less as the generations went by. Shamans say that this was the beginning of the fall of the first great Uruk Kingdom.
From the shadows of the mines of Burz'kal, a new contact was made. The Drow had come offering gifts of knowledge and tribute in the form strange weapons and fine spider silks. Seeking easy tribute, the Orcs gladly took the gifts of the drow and offered them up to Gruumsh. With their new contacts in the Underdark, the Orcs traded with their drow partners, precious metals and gems for Wood and Fresh food. It would not last.
It is said a shaman woke from a terrible dream, and rushed to tell his Warchief of the danger, but before he could make it to the Warchief's chambers, disaster struck.
In a blast of primordial rage, Burz'kal erupted. Flame, lava, ash and soot spewed for miles and miles around. The fortress was seemingly destroyed. Survivors were few and far between. The great armories of the first Uruk Kingdom vanished into the rushing lava flows of the ancient volcano. The fields and herds, lost to choking ash and soot. The First Uruk Kingdom was finished.

'''The Age of Blood: Recent and Current Times'''
----

Atleast one hundred generations have passed since the fall of the first Kingdom, none save perhaps the oldest elves and drow could speak to the authenticity of this it's existence, though rumors persisted that he ruins of Burz'kal existed. Lesser warchiefs have come and gone and though tribute was still given and collected, the orcs had reverted to old ways, leading simple lives and roaming the world from the caves and mountains.
It remained that way until a different Warchief claimed the title. Grull, a particular large and energetic Orc, led a raid on a gnomish compound, driving them out and claiming what was theirs. With his success, Grull deposed the weak warchief that claimed the title and quickly began to mobilize. Beside him rode Gurdak, a shaman of particular potency. He was quickly elevated to the Warshaman.
It was not long until the gnomes' big cousins, The Dwarves of Karagard came to approach the orcs for their transgressions. It in a swift and Brutal defeat, Grull took back into the caves to recoup from the loss. While stitching his wounds, he was approached by two Greenskins, Narbag and Roshnak. They brought word that smoke clouds had been seen building in the south, coming from their ancestral volcanic home. Not long after, Gurdak came and spoke to Grull, telling him that the time was right, and that they must return to Burz'kal. Gathering the tribe together, they set forth on the long trek south to reclaim their birthright.

'''Views of the Other races'''
----

'''Humans'''- They leech life from the land and act as if it is theirs. As long as they continue to pay tribute, they please Gruumsh.

'''Dwarves'''- Vicious and dirty, the dwarves dig deep and build their fortresses high. They are like us in many ways, but fail to see beyond their hole.

'''Drow'''- The Drow, like the elves, consider us savage and primal. Unlike the elves, they embrace the violence we bring, and in return they support us from the dark. That being said, Do not trust one further than you can throw it.

'''Physical Appearance and Personality'''

Orcs are largest of the races, both in height and weight. They average between 6 and 7.5 feet tall and weighing in between 200-400 lbs. Tusks protrude from their lower jowls, these vary is size and shape. Larger tusks are seen as a sign of virility in both males and females. Their skin varies in tones of greens and yellows and grow darker with age. Notably the Warchief, on taking the mantle, is coated in a mixture of ash and oils, turning his skin nearly black. Orcs do not generally grow head or facial hair, though there are always exceptions.

While being single minded in their service to Gruumsh, Orcs are at heart a curious breed. They are intrigued by novelty and seek to learn more about the world around them. Many outsiders see the orc as a dumb savage until they sit and speak with them. While orcs are simple creatures, they are far from being dumb, and understand much more than they generally let on. They do keep a written language, though only the ranks of the Lazgul are taught the characters and meanings

== Burz'Kal Hont-Ob: The Tribe ==

'''Orc Society'''
----

The Tribe is second most important aspect of orc life. For without the tribe, how can one survive? All orcs understand that it is not only the strength of the individual, but the strength of the many, that decides the the fulfillment of the promise of Gruumsh. As such the tribe represents the single minded dedication to Gruumsh.
In the tribe all things are shared. Orcs have no real concept of economics. It is also a meritocracy at it's finest, the strongest are rewarded with the finer weapons and armor. Though food and drink are readily given to all, Orcs covet their gear, as it is their status symbol, their trophies in service to the All-Goth.
Life in the tribe can be harsh at times, as the demand for constant bettering of one's self and the tribe can lead to serious in fighting at times, but these situations only occur when the Warchief or Warshaman is seen as too weak to continue leading the tribe. In normal times, a day in the life of an Orc is filled with fighting, worship, and gathering materials for the makers of the tribe. Games of drinking and eating are also a common occurrence and usually end when one is incapacitated. When the Warchief feels it is time, a Ride will be called, it is at this time that all warriors and shamans of the tribe ride into the "civilized lands" and demand tribute to bring for Gruumsh. Individual Orcs are encouraged to ride on their own, getting to know the land and fighting to better themselves, though a captured orc is a dead orc. (Unless they are able to escape).
Very few orcs venture away from the tribe, as the tribal mentality is so ingrained in them, that the thought of being away from the tribe is in fact being far away from Gruumsh. Orcs that leave the tribe are considered traitors before the eyes of Gruumsh and are declared the greatest of enemies. No mercy is shown to them and their deaths will be incredibly slow and painful.

'''Gatherings, Rituals and Rites'''
----

The number and types of rituals and rites performed are many. Most shamans have their own personal rituals that they will perform at any point in time. These are considered lesser rituals and are too numerous to mention. There are a few major events and rituals that the Orcs hold at certain times

'''The Ride''':
The Ride is the fundamental gathering of the tribe. The orcs gather at the call of the Warchief and ride into the world to perform their sacred duty of culling the weak and collecting Tribute from the other races so that they may please Gruumsh. The Ride also serves as a test for the orcs themselves to see who performs best in combat and thus determine who is ready to be rewarded (or punished). The Ride is usually called once or twice a Moon cycle, it really depends on the Warchief.

'''The Great Tribute''':
The Great Tribute is grand ritual of the Orcs. Performed at the beginning of each full moon, all tribute that has been gathered over the previous moon cycle is gathered and ritualistically given to Gruumsh. More useful items such as weapons and armor are given as trophies to the warriors who have shown their strength. Less useful items are given out to the tribe as needed or thrown into the caldera of Burz'kal. The Warshaman leads this ritual in conjunction with all other lesser shaman.

'''The Rite of Blood''':
The Rite of Blood in the challenge given when one orc feels that he is stronger than another and thus entitled to a claim. Usually this is over a particular piece of gear or in more dire cases, position of leadership. To keep this from being a case of simple bullying, The Warchief or Warshaman must decide if the challenge is just before the fight can occur. In the case of the Warshaman or Warchief being challenged for leadership, the challenge cannot be declined and results in the sacrifice of the loser to Gruumsh '''(*Note* If a challenge is issued to the Warchief or Warshaman, the loser accepts that their character will be Perma-dead, re-rolls will be at staff discretion, I cannot speak for them) (*Note2* Non-leadership challenges do not have to involve combat, IE a maker competition or story telling)'''

These are the most notable gatherings, rites and rituals of the orcs, however some other events are Blessed Ore Smelting, Bonfire nights and Hunts. These events can happen at any time and do not have to be led by the Warchief or Warshaman.

'''Tribal Hierarchy and Law'''
----

Within the tribe, like any other culture, there is a noted hierarchy and a few laws to regulate and lead the Orcs in the proper direction. The Hierarchy is as follows.

'''Warchief'''- The Warchief is the last word on all decisions for the Tribe. He is the undisputed champion and strongest of all orcs. It is at his discretion as to what direction the Tribe will take, though a smart Warcheif will listen to his Warshaman.

'''Warshaman'''- The Warshaman is the religious authority of the tribe. It is under his watchful eye that the tribe and Warcheif are headed in the proper direction as so to please Gruumsh. The Warshaman oversees all rituals and usually serves as arbitrator and speaker for the tribe in matters dealing with other races

'''Thupar'''- Thupar are the elite guard of the Tribe, and as such serve as commander of the Greenskins and Lazgul. There are only two Thupar at any given time and answer directly to the Warchief and Warshaman. These are probably the strongest orcs of the tribe save the Warchief, and command great respect. The position, however, can sometimes be short lived. This is usually the best many orcs can hope and thus there is much competetion. Though few understand it, The Thupar is possibly the most difficult position of leadership, not only being directly responsible for thier underlings, but they are forced to be at their peak at all times, less a more cunning Orc were to claim their title. Lazgul and Greenskins may become a Thupar

'''Greenskin'''- The Greenskin is the main force of the tribe. He is a battle tested warrior and his strength has been proven. It is when an Orc is made a Greenskin that he is given a weapon of Bloodrock, the sacred metal of Gruumsh. They are also the instructors in ways of combat for young orcs who have not earned their place.

'''Lazgul'''- The Lazgul are the Orcs that show the ability to manifest the will of Gruumsh. Also known as the shamans, they serve under the warshaman much in the same capacity that the Greenskins serve the Warchief and as such hold the same place in society.

'''Maker'''- Behind every great society there are those that build. If the Greenskins are the fist of the Tribe, the the Makers are surely the backbone. Since the earliest encounters with Humans, the makers have learned to bend metal and wood, sew and tan leather all to serve the Tribe in it's great promise. Given the Orcish philosophy of strength, the orcish armory is filled with some of the deadliest weapons around. The makers are organized by the Headmaker who works with the Thupar to oversee the needs of the Tribe.

Young Orcs that have not been given a proper place in the tribe serve as auxiliary forces and are usually resigned to doing grunt work for the tribe when they are not training for battle, be that mining for ore or chopping wood or tending to the herds. It is on them to earn their place in the tribe.

'''Laws of the Tribe'''
----

There are five simple laws that the orcs live by

'''1.	Gruumsh Above All Things: Without Gruumsh, there is no life'''

'''2.	Tribe Above The Orc: Without the Tribe, There is no Orc

'''3.	Grow Strong, Learn Much: Strength and knowledge of the world pleases Gruumsh and only serve his purpose'''

'''4.	Cull the Weak: Weakness is to be weeded out. Only the strong survive.
'''

'''5.	Treachery is worse than weakness: A traitorous Orc will suffer a fate worse than death.
== Gruumsh: The All-Goth ==

'''The Uruk-Hai'''
----
* Note that Uruk-hai in this case is not a reference to the Tolkien Uruk hai, but a general term for the "enlightend orc". Uruk, Uruk-hai and orc are interchangeable and refer to the same race*

Burz'kal-The First mountain that spewed the fires of life and the ash and soot that made the lands, roared and covered the sky in a black haze, it is from this explosion that Gruumsh, The All-Goth, Keeper of the land and sea, Master of beast and bone, was spawned. The Shamans say that when Gruumsh took his first breath, that the winds of the world were created. On his second breath He spoke to the strongest beasts in the world, the Uruk, and said on to them, "These lands are my lands, and you must protect them, and make them strong. For this I will grant you a life beyond mindlessness and toil. This task shall be your tribute to me" With these words, the Uruk were given intelligence and purpose. The Uruk-Hai, the high Orc, was born.
The Uruk-Hai went forth into the wilderness, as one with nature and beast, culling the flora and fauna of the weak and sick, so that only the strongest specimens survived and thus ensuring that Gruumsh's covenant was upheld, and for ages uncountable the strongest survived at the hands of the Uruk-Hai.
One day, which day no one is sure, The Uruk-Hai encountered large buildings of stone and wood, tilled and planted fields. This was alien to the nomadic keepers of the land. Never before had it been thought that one should have to work to make things. Stranger than this, were who the Uruk encountered. Humans, small, and frail, but how they toiled and worked to build these massive keeps and farms, The Uruk were intrigued. When they happened on the first human, it is said that the human died at the appearance of the seemingly savage and monstrous Uruk. It so happened that there were many, many more humans than Uruk, and the Humans chased the Uruk back into the wilds. Many of Gruumsh's children were slaughtered in the chase. This is marked as the beginning of the Age of Ash, the First age of the Orc.

'''Worship and Beliefs'''
----

The way of Gruumsh is the way of strength. Only the strong survive, so that all may one day be strong. The way of Gruumsh is also a way of cultivation, so that all may share in the bounty that the world has to offer. The Orcs believe that it is their sacred duty and sole purpose to carry out the cultivation of the world as they owe all they are to the promise of Gruumsh.
The Orcs have a strong sense of "natural" and "un-natural" and as such are opposed, sometimes violently, to arcane magic. Undead and necromancy are seen in an even worse light, As the orc saying goes "What is dead, is weak." and as such, will not tolerate the Undead and their "Shepherds". It also should be stated that orcs do not believe in an afterlife for this very reason. When you are dead, that is the end, for you are weak and have no place left other than as ash and dirt.
This also puts the Orcs at odds with civilization, but knowing that they are entirely incapable wiping out all traces of the unnatural, when the Orcs ride they demand tribute from the "civilized" cultures, as a way to pay for their destructive "progress". This tribute is collected and ritually given to Gruumsh at the start of each full moon.
Combat is central to the worship of Gruumsh as this is a direct act of seeing who is strong and who is weak. The Orcs spar amongst themselves so that each may grow stronger and smarter, and such may better serve Gruumsh.
The gift given by Gruumsh, the gift of the world, is what all orcs fight and die for. To say they are zealous, is probably an understatement. From the outside looking in, the orcs are seen as blood thirsty and mindless, killing and taking as they wish. To the orcs however, they are fulfilling their bargain and making the world a stronger, more bountiful place.

== The Orcs ==

From the mountains and jungles of the south, guttural chanting can heard. The clash of blades resound through the caverns and valleys of the great volcano, Burz'kal. Before looms the mighty Orc. Imposing in stature and ruthless in battle, these Green skinned killing machines live for one purpose..to please their blood thirsty god, Gruumsh.

But not all is as it may seem. Behind their scarred chests beats the heart of the noble savage. Though countless encounters with these mighty beasts speak of their savagery, few in the other races truly understand the ways and purpose of the mighty Tribe of Burz'kal Hont-Ob.
