Scarred Beginnings

The Elves of this small southern clan were out in dance and play on a fine mid-autumn evening. The air was crisp but fair. Stars like diamonds in the sky shone so brightly that lanterns were unneeded. Only being a boy of 12 years Enowin couldn't remember a day that he felt so merry, so joyful, so free. His parents knowing the elation he was having decided to let him stay out later than usual. As the jubilations started to wind down for the evening a cry of the purist horror cut the night.

The boy froze stiff with terror, he had never heard such a sound before in his life. The woman beside him collapsed on top of him, snapping him out of his trance. His heart was beating out of his chest, he was stuck under his neighbour. Her life blood was filling the ground around him... on him... it was every where. Panic took him as he tried in vain to free himself. Then *thud* something hit and threw her off of him, eyes barely opened he looked upon his father kneeling beside him. Enovasle grabbed his sons hand and pulled him up, and in close. Staring at his fathers deep purple eyes Enowin notices the pain that showed in them "father?" he asks weakly. "I'm going to get you out of here son, but you need to run." gasping lightly and grasping his side. "Don't look back, head to the ravine where you always play and hide." Then Enovasle rose to his feet and cast a spell of blinding light that lit the night as if dawn had come.

Running as fast as his legs could take him Enowin tried to navigate away from his father. The light was so magnificent that it even caused him to be momentarily blinded. Knowing his way as if the Valar themselves were guiding him he didn't pause for a moment. His fathers eyes burned into his mind, rage, fear, sorrow and hope they foretold. His instincts lead him down the ravine into an old hollow he like to rest in. The events of the night flashed through his thoughts a million times, sobbing and spent, sleep overtook him.

Foggy eyed he gazed upon a meadow, pure and wonderous. Trees as tall as mountains of every variety surrounded it. Deer, wolf, goat and bear roamed and gave no regard for one another. The tranquility of the place enveloped Enowin. A great bear sauntered over to stand before him, it slowly grabbed his shoulders and placed its forehead to Enowin's. The bear opened its eyes to stare into Enowin's, it had his fathers eyes. Enowin woke with a start and felt the keen kinship with nature elves have always had wash over him. "The pain, the sorrow, the fear will teach me." he said to himself then he said a prayer for his fallen family and kinsman to find peace with the Valar. With only the cloths on his back and his new understanding of the world he walked out of that hollow to find his place in a wide and unforgiving world.
