Homecoming

His footfalls echoed through the wide halls. The place was undeniably beautiful. His Pa had told him so, spoke of it often. Karagard.

The great old halls. The ancient lands. Where the bones of his grandfather's grandfather rested. To hear the old man talk it had been the most sacred of the sacreds. He remembered it, but only vaguely. Even when he had lived here as a child, it had been tainted by his Pa's view, and he had little use for the place, or it's ruling class.

Nearly three decades of travel and listening to his Pa lecture on about about how the 'Clanned Folk' had done nothing but use the commondwarf, and how his lot in life was little more than service.. he was a pawn, a tool, disposable, useable. When he had first met the elderly dwarf and had heard him speak of his clan, his first feeling was a flare of his Father's hatred surging through him.

Here he was at last, one of the faceless 'Clanned Folk' that were his enemies, the one's he'd always heard were the enemy. The reason his Mother, Saerin rest her was not with them. Why his Pa had taken them to the North, and fought for the humans in their civil war.

But Thraim was nothing like what he expected to find. None of the arrogance his Pa had told him of.. nothing of the condescension or condemnation. Only aid. Offers to help him put his Pa's wrongs to rest. It was something he hadn't thought that his Father might not have found his way to the Forge.. might still linger instead of working it with their Maker.

He turned another tunnel, looking up again at the arching carved stonework, seeing the ancient craftsmanship that was undeniably -his-. His heritage, his people. Years amoung humans had stripped him of this. This sense of heritage.. of belonging, and it seemed to tug at his soul.

He let out his air in a huff, the old anger flaring back up. -No-.

He hadn't come back here to cozy up to his families enemies. He hadn't come back to become -friends- with the Clanned. They were the -reason- for his suffering. The reason his Pa had died alone in the mud in the Maker forsaken North.

These were no more his people than the Humans were his people. They were just more Others.

He had no people.
